Merrickville Canalfest

Week-end Fine Craft Show & Sale featuring jewellery, photography, pottery, metalwork, wood carvings, birdhouses, soaps, balms and body lotions, honey and other gourmet foods and more. The show features over 25 local and regional artisans – and a pack of alpacas too!

Model Boat “Show & Sail:” Expect to see as many as 30 model boats launched by the Rideau Nautical Modellers, during Canalfest. Launches will take place on saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Two-Day Silent Auction: On Saturday and Sunday, you can bid on valuable goods, goodies and gift certificates donated by merchants, restaurants and other businesses in the Merrickville area. Different sets of items will be auctioned each day. Proceeds go to support the Lions Club’’s various local projects.

Canalfest Voyageur Canoe Races: Gather your team and paddle down the Canal for cash prizes of $100 for 1st place, $90 for 2nd place, and $60 for 3rd place; a prize of $50 will also be awarded to the best-costumed team. Registration is free. And canoes, life jackets, paddles and an on-board paddling pro will be provided. Races start at 1:00 pm on Sunday. Application forms can be picked up and dropped off at the Goose & Gridiron, or downloaded at merrickvillecanalfest.com.

Food: The Downtowne Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe will be celebrating our local heritage by serving up scoops of its specially created Victorian Brown Bread ice cream, which includes a yummy blend of nuts, raisins and cinnamon. The Merrickville Lions will once again be hosting their “barbecue in the park.” And, of course, Merrickville’’s restaurants and pubs, as always, will have a host of fine fare on their menus.
Canalfest Treasure Chest Quest: Your purchases during Canalfest can win you terrific merchandise from the Canalfest Treasure Chest. All items have been generously donated by Merrickville area merchants and business owners. So take the time to stroll and shop locally.

Children’s activities include the traditional, terrific Kids Loonie Fishing Derby on Saturday from 9:00 am to noon and free face painting on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. And throughout the weekend you can enjoy some eco-fun with Andrea “the Bug Lady” Howard throughout the weekend. Whether they are “big on bugs” or not, kids – and grown-ups too! – are sure to enjoy the Bug Lady and her Museum in a Suitcase. The Rideau Canal History Hunt on Sunday afternoon will provides kids and families with a chance to brush up on some local history – and – win some “cool” and “hot” prizes.
And, take time to visit and support the Blockhouse Museum. The Museum will be open throughout Canalfest weekend.
